27 October, 2009This is for you! We have been given a chance to put our stamp on an NZDTA newsletter; our own little corner, just for us. So, how do we start this? We are spread throughout New Zealand, through public and private practices, all shapes and sizes. But until now, we haven.t really had anything to call our own. I would like to get a group together to start our own section of a website newsletter to share experiences, issues, anecdotes and opportunities. Now is your chance. If you would like to be involved please email Ngaire Mune nzdta@nzdta.co.nz and she will forward your contact details and ideas on to me. There are exciting and changing times ahead - For some DHB assistants the list includes 40 hour weeks, conferences, new facilities... So there has never been a better time for us to get together. I come from an Auckland area, DHB perspective, but really want to hear about those of you from other regions and backgrounds. Hopefully via this corner we can learn more about each other and others can learn more about us; through stories and views as different and varied as we are. MINISTRY OF HEALTH STATEMENT ON AMALGAM & OTHER DENTAL FILLING MATERIALS
Dr Robin Whyman, chief dental officer, said the Ministry of Health's positon on the use of amalgam for dental fillings had not
changed. "Despite some recent American media reports on the use of amalgam fillings, our advice remains unchanged and is very much in line with information currently provided by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Despite some claims that dental amalgam has been shown to adversely affect the health of pregnant women and of younger children, the FDA have actually said that their recent advisory panel did not believe there was enough information to answer that question at that time and the FDA is now undergoing a further process to look again at the scientific literature. "We continually monitor the latest research and literature on amalgam and other dental filling materials, and based on the evidence to date we have no reason to change our policy. Our focus is very much on preventing dental decay, however, when fillings are required, an informed consent process is standard practice. "Dental therapists obtain written or oral permission from parents or caregivers before carrying out work on children and it is usual for dentists to discuss treatment options with their adolescent and adult patients," Dr Whyman said. The Oral Health page on the Ministry of Health website has further information on amalgam and other dental filling materials - www.moh.govt.nz. The FDA website features a Question and Answer section on dental amalgam. For further information please contact Karalyn van Deursen (021) 832 459. NZDTA Statement on Water Fluoridation
