San Antonio Breast Cancer 2011 Conference Review
The SABCS has been held annually since 1977 and has evolved from a one-day clinical meeting into a five-day symposium integrating clinical, translational, and basic research, with a formal collaboration between clinicians at the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) in San Antonio and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) since 2007. It now attracts over 8,000 international attendees annually and is a forum, not only for the presentation of major study results, but also for educational reviews and case-based discussions, making it a very valuable meeting for clinicians and scientists alike.

This Review has been created to allow those unable to attend, but who are keen to keep up with evidence based information and perspectives on progress in breast cancer research, to access a summary of significant clinical studies presented that are likely to affect current practice. Selection and review of the research has been carried out independently by Dr Richard Isaacs, a Medical Oncologist at Palmerston North Hospital, who attended the SABCS.

NZ Pain Management Research Review

NZ Pain Management Research Review - Issue 7
This issue starts with 3 intriguing studies of how our attitudes as healthcare providers can influence the way we treat patients with pain (low back pain in these studies). It's fascinating stuff really - who knew that studying ourselves as clinicians was going to be so important to our patients?
We have also included a study of a capsaicin 8% patch (NGX-4010) for peripheral neuropathic pain. It's a crime that we have such limited access to this type of treatment in NZ - perhaps it's time to start lobbying for these to be available here.

NZ Dental Review

Want to keep up to date?
The need for oral health professionals to keep up to date is increasing and finding time to do this can be difficult.

The NZDTA makes keeping up to date with current oral health and other health related research, easier for members by making several research review publications available on the website. Each article has been reviewed by an appropriate expert so the hard work is done for you.

If there are articles you wish to follow up, there are links at the bottom of each reviewed article. The full text of most articles needs to be purchased, but some are free to view.

Members are also encouraged to find out what additional resources might be available through their District Health Board Library facilities and make use of these. Again, accessing articles through the DHB may not always be free of charge.

Are you protected?
The protection offered by indemnity insurance is important for oral health professionals including dental therapists and dental therapists/dental hygienists. And the NZDTA urges members to take out their own personal cover.

Personal indemnity insurance can be purchased through the New Zealand Dental Association, which is an agent for DPL a company that specialises in this type of insurance for dental professionals. Discounts on premiums are available for NZDTA members.

MINISTRY OF HEALTH STATEMENT ON AMALGAM & OTHER DENTAL FILLING MATERIALS
Dr Robin Whyman, chief dental officer, said the Ministry of Health's positon on the use of amalgam for dental fillings had not changed.

"Despite some recent American media reports on the use of amalgam fillings, our advice remains unchanged and is very much in line with information currently provided by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Despite some claims that dental amalgam has been shown to adversely affect the health of pregnant women and of younger children, the FDA have actually said that their recent advisory panel did not believe there was enough information to answer that question at that time and the FDA is now undergoing a further process to look again at the scientific literature.

"We continually monitor the latest research and literature on amalgam and other dental filling materials, and based on the evidence to date we have no reason to change our policy. Our focus is very much on preventing dental decay, however, when fillings are required, an informed consent process is standard practice.

"Dental therapists obtain written or oral permission from parents or caregivers before carrying out work on children and it is usual for dentists to discuss treatment options with their adolescent and adult patients," Dr Whyman said.

The Oral Health page on the Ministry of Health website has further information on amalgam and other dental filling materials - www.moh.govt.nz.

The FDA website features a Question and Answer section on dental amalgam.
